What Are PDUs?

PDUs are one-hour blocks of time spent learning, teaching others, or volunteering in the field of project management. They are required to maintain PMI certifications and must be earned and reported over a three-year cycle.

There are two primary categories of PDUs:

  1. Education PDUs

These focus on professional development through formal or informal learning, including:

  • Attending workshops, seminars, or chapter events
  • Enrolling in e-learning programs or instructor-led courses
  • Reading industry publications or books
  • Participating in webinars or online forums

Education PDUs are further aligned with PMI’s Talent Triangle, which encompasses:

  • Ways of Working – Technical project management skills and methodologies
  • Power Skills – Leadership, communication, and emotional intelligence
  • Business Acumen – Strategic and organizational insight for aligning projects with business goals
  1. Giving Back PDUs

These are earned by actively contributing to the profession through:

  • Creating content (articles, blogs, white papers)
  • Giving presentations or training sessions
  • Mentoring others in project management
  • Volunteering with PMI Botswana Chapter or global PMI initiatives

How Many PDUs Do You Need?

PDUs vary depending on your certification type. For example:

  • PMP, PgMP, PMI-ACP, and other senior-level credentials require 60 PDUs over three years.
  • CAPM requires 15 PDUs in the same time period.

Each credential has minimum requirements for each leg of the Talent Triangle, with a certain number of PDUs that may also be earned through Giving Back.

You can monitor your progress and report PDUs using PMI’s Continuing Certification Requirements System (CCRS).
